Birth Control Helped My Horrendous Cycle

Since I was twelve years old I have had really bad cramps. I would always have to miss school or not be
able to make it to places where I had to be. As I got older my menstrual cramps kept getting worse and I would have to take days off from work. Eventually, it had gotten so bad that the first day of every cycle made me so sick that I could not eat or drink anything because I would be vomiting the entire day. Imagine severely cramping and vomiting for a day straight every month. The next day would not be any better because I would be so weak and I would have to replenish everything that I lost which was very hard to do. The nurses at my doctor’s office would tell me to drink a lot of Gatorade so that I would not have to go get fluids at the hospital. Pain medication was out of the question because it did not work and at one point I could not even take any pain medication because of how sick I would be. I dealt with this for years, I just figured this was how things were supposed to be. One day I decided that I could not deal with my horrendous cycle every month so I went to the doctor’s office and demanded something be done. I was tired of them telling me to take the pain medication because that was a joke, and I could not just lay in bed every month. The pain medication they prescribed to me only enhanced my discomfort in the beginning when I could take it. All of the minor side effects that came along with that medication such as sweating, shaking, fatigue, and dizziness, I experienced. With that being said, when I went into the doctor’s office I was in pursuit of a different solution. My doctor let me know that it was common for women to deal with these kinds of issues around their menstrual cycle because of several reasons. I was afraid that she was going to tell me that I had endometriosis. However, it turns out that I just produced a very high level of estrogen. Finally, my doctor presented me with the option of birth control. I was very hesitant because I have my theories about birth control but at that point, I would try anything. She gave me birth control, nausea medication, and new pain medication and told me it would take about three months before my hormone levels balanced out. I was bummed out because I wanted something that worked right away, I thought I would have to deal with another three more months of agony. I started taking the birth control and to my surprise, the next cycle I had was a breeze. I could not believe something as simple as birth control could help me so much with something that kept me down for so long. It was confusing to me that birth control had worked so well for me because it is estrogen-based and my problem was too much estrogen. I no longer got sick and my cramps were moderate, sometimes I didn’t even need the pain medication that was prescribed. I will admit when I first started taking birth control I experienced a lot of changes such as being emotional, overeating, craving a lot of sweets, and breakouts but it was not anything drastic. I am so happy I decided to take the birth control because it allowed me to be able to navigate through life while on my cycle. After two years on the pill, I did decide to stop taking it, I have a post coming soon about my reasons. With this current post and my upcoming post hopefully, you will be able to have a better understanding of the pros and cons of taking birth control.
