I Stopped Eating Sugar For 30 Days

My growing sugar addiction became a problem I could no longer ignore. I had been regularly consuming candy, cookies, cakes, and sugary drinks from Starbucks. In the morning, I found myself adding an excessive amount of sugar to my oatmeal. Throughout the day, I snacked on sweets, and every night after dinner, I had to follow it up with dessert.

One day, I asked my mom to take a picture of me with my phone. I didn't look through the pictures she had taken of me until a few days later, and I did not recognize the person in the photos. My face looked different, and I immediately knew it may have had something to do with how much sugar I was constantly consuming.

At the beginning of the following month, I decided to stop eating sugar for twenty-one days, and then I extended it to thirty days. On day ten, I started to see results. My face was back to looking normal, I felt great, and although it was hard to resist my sugar cravings, I knew I had to see this detox through.

When I stopped eating sugar, I noticed the following things...

  • My mood improved tremendously.  I was a lot happier because I was not as anxious.
  • I slept well at night. It was easier for me to fall asleep at night, and I was not cranky in the morning.
  • My gut health was great, and I did not feel sluggish.
  • My skin was glowing. It was the best it had ever been. I am assuming my skin congestion came from consuming so much sugar.
  • I was happy with what I saw in the mirror. My waist began to get smaller and smaller. In addition to that, my belly fat began to leave.

What drinks did you consume when you stopped eating sugar for thirty days?

I drank water, unsweetened black tea, unsweetened green tea, and unsweetened almond milk.

What did you eat during this time?

During this time, my diet stayed the same; I just removed refined sugar. I am a pescatarian. However, I do still eat eggs. In the morning, I eat eggs, sometimes scrambled, sometimes hard-boiled, with protein waffles or a protein bagel. I also enjoy eating chickpea scramble for breakfast. For lunch, I like to incorporate as many greens as I can, so I always go for a salad or a green smoothie. When it is dinner time, I opt for high-protein meals. My go-to is fish, brown rice or quinoa, and a green vegetable.

How did you deal with your sugar cravings?

Berries, Berries, Berries!

After giving up sugar for thirty days, when I did try to drink a sugary drink, I noticed I did not like the taste of it. Currently, I do eat sweets, but in moderation. Whenever I feel as if my sugar cravings are getting out of control again, I quickly start back detoxing. Depending on the circumstance, I may go ten days,  two weeks, or a month without eating any refined sugar.
